What happened during Kristy?

A tropical depression formed about 520 nautical miles southwest of the southern tip of Baja California at 0000 UTC on 30 August 2006 after a tropical wave that moved westward across the Atlantic and Central America became better organized. The system strengthened to a tropical storm six hours later and moved generally northwestward. Steering currents collapsed after 31 August, causing the cyclone to meander and later drift slowly westward before degenerating to a remnant low by 0600 UTC 8 September and dissipating on 9 September.

Kristy did not make any landfalls. It remained well offshore in the eastern North Pacific for its entire life, so no watches or warnings were required for coastal areas.

The storm reached its maximum intensity at 1200 UTC 31 August with maximum sustained winds of 70 knots (about 80 mph) and a minimum central pressure of 985 mb, equivalent to a minimal Category 1 hurricane on the Saffir–Simpson scale. After that peak, Kristy weakened and fluctuated between tropical storm and depression strength as it moved westward.

There are no reports of storm surge or rainfall impacts tied to Kristy in the official record, and no surge heights or rainfall totals at specific cities or counties were reported in the post-storm analysis. Because the cyclone stayed over open water, coastal observations of surge or heavy rain related to Kristy were not documented in the report.

No casualties or damage were reported in association with Kristy. The areas most affected were open ocean regions; no direct or indirect deaths or property losses were recorded.

Noteworthy points include that the storm formed rapidly from a disturbance that was mentioned in official outlooks only about two hours before formation, and that official track forecast errors for Kristy were larger than the recent 5-year averages while intensity forecast errors were smaller than average.

County-specific summary Paid feature

Paid members can generate summaries tailored to the counties of their choice. The Kristy TCR covers impacts across many counties and states — a Pinellas County resident doesn't need the Asheville detail, and a Buncombe County resident doesn't need the Tampa surge data.
