What happened during Greg?

A tropical depression formed about 300 nautical miles south of Manzanillo, Mexico, at 1200 UTC on 17 July 2017 from a tropical wave. The system moved generally westward across the eastern Pacific for most of its life, becoming Tropical Storm Greg on 18 July and remaining a westward-moving tropical storm with little net change in strength through the 20s of July. Greg turned northwest and weakened to a depression by 0000 UTC 26 July, crossed into the central Pacific later that day, degenerated to a remnant low on 27 July, and dissipated soon afterward well east-southeast of the Hawaiian Islands.

Greg did not make any landfalls. It remained over the open waters of the eastern and then central North Pacific for its entire lifetime, and no coastal watches or warnings were required.

The storm’s peak intensity occurred around 0000–0600 UTC 21 July, when maximum sustained winds reached 50 knots (about 58 mph) and the estimated minimum central pressure was 1000 mb. At peak it was a moderate tropical storm and never reached hurricane strength.

No storm surge reports or significant coastal inundation were associated with Greg because it stayed far offshore. There were also no reports of notable rainfall totals at populated locations in the NHC record; no ship reports of tropical-storm-force winds or coastal surge were recorded.

There were no reported deaths or damage from Greg. The storm largely stayed over open water and produced no casualties or reported impacts to land.

Forecasts anticipated Greg’s formation well in advance, and the NHC intensity forecasts were generally skillful compared with recent averages. Track forecast errors were larger than the recent 5-year means, particularly at longer lead times, and several global models showed a northward bias tied to intensity differences.

County-specific summary Paid feature

Paid members can generate summaries tailored to the counties of their choice. The Greg TCR covers impacts across many counties and states — a Pinellas County resident doesn't need the Asheville detail, and a Buncombe County resident doesn't need the Tampa surge data.
