What happened during Alvin?

A tropical depression formed about 300 nautical miles (nm) south of the southern tip of Baja California at 0000 UTC on 27 May 2007 after a tropical wave moved across Central America. The system moved slowly westward, becoming Tropical Storm Alvin at 0000 UTC 29 May. Alvin reached its peak on 29 May and then weakened as it moved west into more stable air and stronger wind shear. The circulation degenerated into a remnant low at 0000 UTC 1 June and the remnants finally dissipated at 1800 UTC 6 June while well east of Hawaii.

Alvin remained entirely over the open ocean and did not make landfall. No watches or warnings were required at any time during its life.

The cyclone’s maximum sustained winds peaked at 35 knots (40 mph) with a minimum central pressure of 1003 millibars at 1200 UTC on 29 May. At peak it was a weak tropical storm (well below hurricane strength).

There were no reported storm surge measurements associated with Alvin, and the report contains no accounts of heavy rainfall at land locations. Because Alvin stayed at sea, there are no listed rainfall totals for cities or counties in the NHC report.

No casualties or damage were reported. The areas most affected were limited to the open ocean; there were no direct or indirect deaths or reported destruction.

Forecast products began highlighting the disturbance on 24 May and the possibility of cyclone formation about 30 hours before genesis. Official track and intensity forecasts for Alvin had below-average errors compared with recent five-year means, and no watches or warnings were required.

County-specific summary Paid feature

Paid members can generate summaries tailored to the counties of their choice. The Alvin TCR covers impacts across many counties and states — a Pinellas County resident doesn't need the Asheville detail, and a Buncombe County resident doesn't need the Tampa surge data.
