What happened during Gonzalo?

A tropical depression formed from a westward-moving African tropical wave about 0000 UTC 12 October 2014 roughly 340 nautical miles east of the Leeward Islands. The system became Tropical Storm Gonzalo later that day and rapidly strengthened, becoming a hurricane around 1200 UTC 13 October as it moved through the northern Leeward Islands. Gonzalo tracked northwestward and then northward over the central Atlantic, reached peak intensity mid‑October, turned north-northeast, made landfall in Bermuda on 18 October, and became extratropical near Newfoundland on 19 October before its remnants moved into the North Atlantic and affected parts of the United Kingdom and northern Europe.

Gonzalo made multiple landfalls in the Leeward Islands as it strengthened on 13 October: it passed over Antigua in the early afternoon, its southwest eyewall moved over St. Barthélemy about 2000 UTC, then the center made landfall on St. Martin at about 2245 UTC (estimated intensity 75 kt) and over Anguilla about 45 minutes later. The hurricane later made landfall on the southwestern coast of Bermuda shortly after 0000 UTC 18 October with estimated 1‑minute sustained winds of 95 kt (Category 2).

The hurricane’s maximum intensity was estimated at 125 kt (1‑minute sustained winds) with a minimum central pressure near 940 mb, reached at 1200 UTC 16 October. That peak made Gonzalo the strongest October/November hurricane over the Atlantic north of 20°N and east of 80°W at the time. Aircraft, satellite, and surface data were used in the intensity estimates.

Measured storm surge and rainfall were modest in most locations. A NOAA tide gauge at Esso Pier in northern Bermuda recorded a storm surge of 2.54 ft and a highest storm tide of 3.25 ft above mean lower low water; coastal flooding on Bermuda was limited because landfall occurred near low tide. Barbuda recorded a 1.08 ft surge. Rainfall totals included 5.70 inches at St. Martin (the highest in the Leeward Islands), 1.28 inches at Antigua, and about 2–3 inches across Bermuda and parts of southeastern Newfoundland (examples: St. John’s area totals around 2.0–2.7 inches).

Gonzalo is believed to have caused three direct deaths in the Leeward Islands associated with boats (one confirmed fatality in Simpson Bay Lagoon, St. Maarten, and two people missing and presumed dead), and no deaths or serious injuries were reported in Bermuda. The storm produced extensive wind damage in parts of Anguilla, St. Barthélemy, and both sides of St. Martin, with downed trees and power lines, roof and structural damage, and widespread power outages. Insured losses in Bermuda were reported by media at roughly $200–$400 million (USD), with many boats damaged and prolonged power restoration required. After becoming extratropical, the system’s remnants contributed to two additional deaths and several injuries in Great Britain and caused travel disruptions there.

Notable aspects include Gonzalo’s rapid early intensification and its October peak strength (125 kt, 940 mb), making it historically strong for that region and month. It was the strongest hurricane to affect Bermuda since Fabian (2003) and the strongest October hurricane to make landfall on Bermuda since 1926. Forecasts initially underpredicted the timing and rapid early intensification; however NHC track forecasts were generally close to the observed path near Bermuda, while intensity forecasts showed a modest low bias during Gonzalo’s rapid strengthening.
