Ana formed from a tropical wave that moved off the west coast of Africa on 8 August 2009. A small surface low developed along the wave and a tropical depression formed at 0600 UTC 11 August about 200 nautical miles west of the Cape Verde Islands. The system strengthened to tropical storm strength on 12 August, weakened to a remnant low on 13 August, then reformed into a tropical depression early on 15 August about 935 nautical miles east of the Lesser Antilles and regained tropical storm strength later that day. Ana weakened again on 16 August and lost a well-defined center that day, degenerating into a tropical wave before reaching the Lesser Antilles; the cyclone’s life cycle was essentially 11–16 August 2009.
Ana did not make any landfalls. Watches were issued for many islands in the eastern Caribbean and nearby territories (including St. Maarten, Saba, St. Eustatius, the British and U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Dominica, Guadeloupe, and parts of Hispaniola), but the storm degenerated before reaching those islands and no landfall occurred.
The storm’s maximum sustained surface winds were 35 knots (40 mph) and its lowest analyzed central pressure was 1003 mb (the report notes a 1004 mb dropsonde). At peak it was a minimal tropical storm (well below hurricane strength).
Storm surge and rainfall impacts were minimal to none from Ana. The report records no observations of tropical-storm-force winds, no reports of storm surge heights, and no measured significant rainfall totals or flooding tied to Ana at named cities or counties. Aircraft, satellite, and remote sensing data were used to track and analyze Ana, but surface impacts were not reported.
There were no ship reports of tropical-storm-force winds and no confirmed deaths or damage associated with Ana. Forecast performance for Ana was generally good for track guidance (official track errors were smaller than five‑year means), though intensity forecasts had a high bias because the weakening and dissipation were not well predicted; post-analysis showed the system lacked a closed circulation by the time advisories extended into the eastern Caribbean.
Paid members can generate summaries tailored to the counties of their choice. The Ana TCR covers impacts across many counties and states — a Pinellas County resident doesn't need the Asheville detail, and a Buncombe County resident doesn't need the Tampa surge data.
