Summary

Tropical Depression 11W (Eleven) currently has maximum sustained winds of 30 mph and is moving northwest at about 22 mph. As of the latest warning, it was located about 459 nautical miles east-northeast of Manila, Philippines. JTWC forecasts 11W to keep tracking generally northwest through about the next 60 hours, staying on the southwestern side of a subtropical ridge. The system is expected to approach landfall northeast of Hong Kong, with landfall expected just before about 60 hours. The depression is forecast to steadily strengthen before landfall, potentially reaching a peak of 75 knots (about 86 mph) around 60 hours. As it passes through the Luzon Strait, mountainous terrain on Luzon may disrupt inflow and lead to an uneven wind field, with the strongest winds in the northern half of the storm. After moving into the South China Sea (between about 24 and 36 hours), conditions may become more favorable, which could allow for rapid intensification and a peak stronger than currently forecast. After landfall, JTWC expects rapid weakening due to terrain, with the system dissipating as a significant tropical cyclone by about 120 hours. The latest analysis also estimated significant wave heights of 12 feet.

THE STEERING RIDGE. 11W IS ANTICIPATED TO REMAIN ON A STEADY TRACK
AS IT APPROACHES LANDFALL NORTHEAST OF HONG KONG, WITH TERMINAL
LANDFALL EXPECTED JUST BEFORE TAU 60. REGARDING INTENSITY, 11W IS
EXPECTED TO STEADILY INTENSIFY UP UNTIL LANDFALL, FOLLOWED BY DRASTIC 
WEAKENING CAUSED BY TERRAIN INTERACTION. AS THE STORM TRANSITS THE
